Guys and Dolls are a delight

Guys and Dolls: Civic Hall, Trowbridge

DAMON RUNYAN would have undoubtedly approved as his colourful Broadway characters where brought back to life in this Trowbridge Operatic Society production.

The society gave this musical version a zest and enthusiasm which makes for a super night out.

The group has a handful of natural comedian-singers and this was ideal ground for them. And they have the benefit of a first-class orchestra which helps to keep the action moving.

Allison Lomax shone as Mission girl Sarah Brown but her beau Sky Masterson (Julian Parker) would have benefited from being a little more over-the-top and a little less gloomy in his wheeling and dealing.

Characters like Nathan Detroit (Paul Butler), Benny Southstreet (Bob Knowles), Miss Adelaide (Kath Cowdroy), Harry the Horse (Geoff Hallchurch) and Big Jule (Norman Pascall) kept the first night audience enthralled.

The original production was schedule for last month but had to be postponed because of a council-backed trade fair. Gloomy organisers believe this may result in a hefty financial loss. The production runs until Saturday.
