Iolanthe - May 2007

In the libretto of the Gilbert & Sullivan Opera in two Acts, the first Act is to be “An Arcadian Landscape. A river runs around the back of the stage. A rustic bridge crosses the river” and the second Act, Palace Yard, Westminster. It therefore came as something of a shock when the show opened to see a Set that was difficult to discern and remained for both Acts.

Having said that, the singing was, as ever, extremely good from both the male and female choruses and the parts well defined.

The lighting and sound were both well controlled and the Orchestra under the Musical Direction of Helen Heaton was well balanced and tuneful.

Paul Butler was impressive as The Lord Chancellor and Bryan Hussey and Sean Andrews both sang particularly well as Earl Mountararat and Earl Tolloller. Neal Lemay-Lamb made a fine Private Willis but, being on Sentry duty, should have had a rifle.

Craig Fisher was well cast as Strephon. He has an excellent sense of timing and his singing has developed well.

Teresa Bray was more than impressive as Phyllis, her acting and facial expressions were excellent and her beautiful singing was a delight to hear. Michelle Hole as the Queen of the Fairies played this part with authority and Kate Courage was delightful as Iolanthe.

Leonie Harrison, Mari Webster and Maria Matthews completed the cast and did very well.

Directed by Graham Billing, this production was certainly different but the lasting memory will be the high standard of the excellent singing by everyone.
