“The Pirates of Penzance”
November 1998

This was a very interesting and refreshing production of one of G & S’s most popular Savoy operas. With witty dialogue and delightful music it has pleased audiences since April 3rd 1880.

The clever well-constructed set was both colourful and interesting and used to good advantage by the cast. The positioning of the orchestra on stage left as a Band Stand with Musical Director suitably costumed was most effective both musically and visually. With the cast appearing during the overture the mood was set for another challenging presentation. How nice to see such a mixed age group on stage. The juveniles were well trained and performed impeccably and it was so good to see several more senior members enjoying themselves and adding an authentic touch to the community atmosphere.

Lighting was very well controlled and costumes were colourful and effective. Perhaps the pirates would have looked more menacing had they worn large earrings or one or two eye patches and The Pirate King needed something like an old Tricorne to distinguish him from the others.

The small orchestra played well and did more than justice to the score.

In conclusion this was another production giving so much pleasure to an appreciative audience. The Chorus singing was once again of a very high standard and the men certainly did not let the ladies get away with all the honours.

Many Congratulations to Trowbridge AOS once again.
